Meet by the red pillar box on Broad Street. If this sounds like the opening to a novel, that's hardly surprising, for Oxford is the inspiration behind many a tale. Discover pivotal moments in the city's history. Varied, funny and of course educational.
WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?
This walking and punting tour is led by alumni from Oxford University. The ones who have walked the walk, and know the city better than anyone. This is a one-of-a-kind tour, as the students have a deep passion for the architecture and history. They can also share insights into studying and living at one of our great universities. This is also the students' story.
In just an hour and a half, you will be seeing the architecture from every angle. There are of course many examples of sites that stimulated our cherished authors, including the lamp-post that inspired Narnia, and the buildings that fired Philip Pullman to include them in his Dark Materials trilogy, and that's all before you start to weave your way down the River Oxford towards Christ Church Meadows, where Lewis Carroll wrote his 'Alice' stories.
Oxford is a world example of Gothic and Baroque architecture, and seeing it from a walking point of view, and then from various points along the river is a treat.
TELL ME MORE
You can share this tour, or you can elect to go privately. It's a proper day out.
After the walk, you will be directed down to the boathouse to meet up with your punt chauffeur. For the next half hour, you can dip your fingers into the water and marvel at the Botanic Gardens and Magdalen College School fields before punting along Christ Church Meadows. This is a peaceful space, home to a herd of pedigree Old English Longhorn cattle, and a wide biodiversity of species. Conservation is at the heart of the Meadow, and much has been done to restore the flood plain. Your punt tour will go past St Hilda's College gardens, before turning around and returning to the boathouse.
Look out for Alice and the rabbit hole. This is a spot where all things seem possible.
